How to help the world’s most vulnerable get married

NEW YORK — The world’s poorest people are the ones most likely to get married, according to a report by the United Nations and the United States.
The World Bank and the UN released the report Wednesday, titled “Marriage and Family,” highlighting the growing importance of the issue to people in poverty.
In 2015, only about one in five people in the world got married, and the number is expected to rise to about one out of three by 2030.
More than 60 percent of those marriages occur in developing countries.
“Marriage has the potential to bring people together and give them a sense of belonging, dignity and security,” said Yvonne Gaudreau, the U.N. special rapporteur on poverty.
“Married people have more economic opportunities and more opportunities for their children, and they also have more hope and optimism,” she added.
Despite the economic benefits, there are still challenges that remain for poor people.
“The lack of access to marriage and family programs has led to a lack of economic opportunity for many of the poorest people, including the poorest women, children, the elderly and those with disabilities,” the report said.
It also noted that nearly one-third of marriages in developing nations are not recognized by the local government and the family structure of marriages is uneven.
About one-in-five women in India, South Africa, China, India and Pakistan get married.
Only about one-fifth of women in China get married and the majority of marriages are in rural areas.
Women in countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Vietnam also face a lot of hurdles, the report found.
One-in, six women in Nepal and one-fourth in Bangladesh are married.
In China, only one-sixth of women get married; in India more than half get married before age 30 and half are not married at all.
The report found that many of those in rural regions are not able to access education, health care, and other forms of economic and social support.
