How to propose marriage for a gay couple

A gay couple seeking to get married in Massachusetts is being told that the state’s marriage law does not recognize their union.
According to the Globe and Mail, a gay man and woman are suing Massachusetts to have their marriage legally recognized as the union of a man and a woman, and to have it declared valid by a judge.
The couple was asked to file a complaint by a lawyer working with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts in September, after they were denied a marriage license for a couple in the state.
They asked the judge to grant their request for a temporary injunction, which is similar to a marriage certificate.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday.
It alleges that the Massachusetts Department of Revenue has refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, citing the state law which says that marriage is between a man or a woman.
The Globe reported that the complaint says that the agency cited the statute in refusing to issue a license to a gay male couple in 2014 because it would interfere with the rights of another couple to marry.
“In our case, the issue here is the constitutionality of a statute that would allow a state to ban marriage between two men and a couple,” said the complaint filed by the American Family Association and the Family Foundation.
“This is a very clear case that the law is discriminatory, and I am not comfortable with that.”
It adds that “this case is not about the constitution.
This is a case about an unfair law that would deny marriage rights to a man who is a married gay man, and a gay woman who is married to a woman.”
The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, which oversees the state marriage license department, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
