Updated September 25, 2019 17:23:17 The Northern Territory has unveiled a new “marriage introduction” list to help couples navigate the changing law and court system in their home state.
Key points:The list, which includes information on new laws, will be made available for anyone who wants to get married in the NTThe Northern Territory’s legal framework is more flexible than other states’In a bid to make sure couples can get married as quickly as possible, the NT Government has published a new list of laws that couples can apply to obtain a marriage certificate in the Territory.
“It’s been a long time coming, and a long process of waiting,” NT Attorney-General Rob White said.
“But the Northern Territory is finally getting to the point where the process is actually happening.”
The list was published by the NT’s Ministry of Justice and Information and has the support of the NT Attorney General and Attorney-Gen Scott Morrison, who also chairs the Legal Services Council of the Territory (LSCT).
The new list is meant to help people navigate the Northern Territories legal framework.
“The aim is to give people the information they need to make a decision and to get to a decision that is in the best interests of their marriage,” Attorney-Generals White and Morrison said.
Mr Morrison said the list of “law changes” included changes to the way in which couples are eligible for marriage.
“We’ve done a lot of work with our lawyers and lawyers have done a very significant amount of work on the changes that we’re making to the law in the Northern Australia,” Mr Morrison said on Tuesday.
“In some respects it’s very similar to the laws in other states, in some respects they’re a bit different in the way they deal with things like marriage and adoption, and in other respects it may be a little bit more specific to what you can do.”
Mr Morrison says the changes are “in line with other states” but that they’re still very much a work in progress.
“There are some things that are very clear and in line with what the states are doing and some of the other changes that have been made in the last few months,” he said.
The NT Government says the list is intended to help “make sure that couples get to the marriage they’re meant to get”.
“The Northern Australian marriage system is very different to the other states.
There are many different ways that couples may apply to get a marriage and it is a complex process,” Mr White said on Monday.”
So it’s important that couples understand what they’re going to need to do to apply for a marriage.”
In the Northern territory, a new law allows couples to apply to a court for a court order to amend their relationship to allow them to marry in the territory.
“That is one of the main reasons we need to be able to get couples to marry, because if they don’t marry then they’re not legally married,” Mr Whit said.
